Your front yard is often the first thing that people notice when they visit your home. Maintaining a well-manicured lawn can keep the soil healthy and improve the curb appeal of your property. If your yard is sparse or full of weeds, however, the process of planting seeds and bringing the lawn back to life can be time-consuming. Fortunately, sod installation is a quick and easy solution. Sod is fully grown grass that is ready to be rolled out onto your yard or garden. To make the job of laying sod completely stress-free, be sure to follow these tips and tricks.

1) Don't forget to prepare the soil properly before placing the sod.

Your sod must be installed on soil that has been sufficiently prepared. Failure to check the quality of the soil could cause drainage problems or water efficiency issues later. Remove any debris or rocks from the area and use a rototiller to loosen the uppermost inches of soil. Next, add a mixture of clay and sand to the topsoil to eliminate water retention after the sod has been installed. You'll have to incorporate a starter fertilizer as well. An experienced sod installer can advise you on the best fertilizer recommendation for your lawn. Lastly, spread out the soil until it is perfectly level to help with placing the sod evenly.

2) Lay the sod down in straight rows, making sure that the edges of all the pieces are tightly joined together.

You should begin the installation process as soon as the sod arrives on your property. If you wait too long, the sod could become dry and difficult to roll into position. The ideal spot to start is a straight border on your yard or garden. Carefully roll out the pieces, one at a time, in a long line. Check that the sod is flat and smooth along the ground without any bumps. When you begin the next row, cut a section of sod in half to use as the starting piece. Stagger the remaining pieces as if you were laying bricks, continuing this pattern until the entire lawn is covered. Confirm that every piece of sod fits tightly together to hide the seams and protect the edges from wilting.

3) Once the sod is installed, be sure to take some important steps to keep your new lawn in excellent condition.

When the job is complete, the aftercare is just as crucial as the installation. One of the most vital steps is to water the sod at the right times. Keeping the lawn hydrated is essential during the first few weeks following the installation, as the roots need plenty of water to properly settle. Ideally, you should make sure that the sod is watered every morning for two or three weeks. After that, it's acceptable to water the lawn on a normal schedule based on where you live. Try not to water the sod in the evening because the moisture will build up overnight and lead to bacterial growth. You'll also need to prohibit anyone from walking on the sod for several days after it has been placed. Adequate maintenance of your new lawn will help to extend the lifespan of the sod for a long time.

By laying sod, you'll instantly create a strong and beautiful lawn after just a few hours of work. If you are interested in upgrading your own yard, a professional sod installer can help you get started.
